Manchester United have been told that Chelsea's £5million termination fee to back out of a permanent deal for Jadon Sancho would be insignificant to the West London club.
The English forward is currently on a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge, following a brief stint at Borussia Dortmund during the latter part of the previous season. Chelsea have an obligation to buy the attacker for between £20m and £25m next summer.
Sancho, 24, had a promising start at Chelsea, providing three assists in his first three games. He has started 19 matches for the Blues but has only played the full 90 minutes eight times, netting just two goals for Enzo Maresca's team.
But the former Manchester City academy player struggled of late, leading to speculation that the Blues may decide against signing the United forward.
And ex-City and England international Danny Mills has expressed his opinion that Sancho could very well return to Old Trafford this summer. Mills suggests it might be more economical for Chelsea to pay the £5m fee required not to sign him.
“Jadon Sancho is one of about 5000 players Chelsea have on their books at the moment!” he said via Foot Italia .
“If they want to send him back to Manchester United and terminate their obligation to buy, £5m is absolutely nothing to Chelsea – they’re not going to be bothered about that and it’s not going to affect them in any way.
“I reckon Chelsea will be looking at the situation and thinking, ‘if we decide to keep Sancho, it’s going to cost us a lot more than £5m’. From a business perspective, if they don’t want him, then it’s a pretty cheap price to pay in order to get out of it.
“You have to assume that Chelsea will probably go heavy again in the summer transfer window. Has Sancho been good enough to warrant a place in that squad? I’m not sure he has been, so he could well end up finding himself back at Manchester United at the start of next season.”
