Pittsburgh Steelers punter Cameron Johnston is taking all the right steps to return from a severe knee injury that ended his 2024 season in Week 1. Johnston suffered a multi-ligament knee injury when a Falcons defender dove into his flexed plant leg.
Johnston had a strong preseason that appeared to have him set up to finally fix the team’s punter issues. However, replacement Corliss Waitman stepped into the role well.
Now, six months after the initial injury, Johnston is already back on the field punting. He posted a video to his Instagram from the indoor facility of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex showing his progress.
It is the first time since the injury that Johnston has taken this step. He started running a month ago. While he is not fully recovered, it suggests his return is coming sooner than later, and he should be on track to return for training camp.
Johnston signed on a three-year contract to come over from the Houston Texans. Johnston was supposed to be the long-term answer, and after an impressive preseason and training camp.
