Manchester United have been told that Chelsea's £5million termination fee to opt out of a permanent deal for Jadon Sancho would be 'nothing' to the West London club.
The English forward is currently on a season-long loan at Stamford Bridge following a brief loan spell at Borussia Dortmund during the latter half of the previous campaign. Chelsea have an obligation to buy Sancho for between £20m and £25m next summer.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a positive start at Chelsea with three assists in his first three appearances. Sancho has started 19 times for the Blues but has only completed 90 minutes on eight occasions, scoring just two goals for Enzo Maresca's side.
The former Manchester City academy player struggled more recently at Stamford Bridge, leading to suggestions that the Blues may opt out of signing the United attacker.
Ex-City and England international Danny Mills has shared his view that Sancho may very well end up back at Old Trafford this summer. Mills believes it may be more cost-effective for Chelsea to pay the £5m fee needed not to sign him.
“Jadon Sancho is one of about 5000 players Chelsea have on their books at the moment!” he said via Foot Italia.
“If they want to send him back to Manchester United and terminate their obligation to buy, £5m is absolutely nothing to Chelsea – they’re not going to be bothered about that and it’s not going to affect them in any way.
“I reckon Chelsea will be looking at the situation and thinking, ‘if we decide to keep Sancho, it’s going to cost us a lot more than £5m’. From a business perspective, if they don’t want him, then it’s a pretty cheap price to pay in order to get out of it.
“You have to assume that Chelsea will probably go heavy again in the summer transfer window. Has Sancho been good enough to warrant a place in that squad? I’m not sure he has been, so he could well end up finding himself back at Manchester United at the start of next season.”
