Messina acknowledged the project's potential but highlighted the uncertainty surrounding its impact on the EuroLeague.
"I think it's an interesting project," Messina said, via Pianeta Basket. "However, it’s crucial to understand what role the EuroLeague will play in all of this."
He expressed skepticism about the feasibility of an entirely new competition, stating:
"Right now, I don't want to speculate too much, but it seems impossible to create an NBA-FIBA league with 16 teams that are completely different from those currently in the EuroLeague."
Messina also suggested that some teams have already been, or will soon be, approached to join the new league.
"At that point, it will come down to what the teams decide to do and how the EuroLeague responds," he said. "Will there be a communication channel between the EuroLeague, NBA, and FIBA?"
"Silver’s statement suggests they’ve already received the green light from ownership. If he made such a claim, it means today's discussions with the owners went in a specific direction."
