Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has been warned he will lose if he falls out with Clearlake Capital and Behdad Eghbali over their plans for Stamford Bridge.
One of the key issues the club must resolve in the coming years is whether they leave their home of more than 100 years or stay put and just expand its 40,000 capacity. The Guardian reported in September last year that Chelsea are in talks over building a new stadium in Earls Court, but a difference in opinion has led to tension within the club's hierarchy.
In an interview with Bloomberg this week, Boehly admitted the stadium development opportunity will determine whether they aligned or whether they should decide to go different ways. Amid the fraught relationship, reports have indicated that both Boehly and Clearlake have previously explored buying each other out.
However, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has warned that, should it come to that, Boehly will likely lose out due to the financial might of Clearlake and Eghbali.
"If they fall out to such a point, he [Boehly] will lose, because Clearlake and Eghbali have got more money than him, and that will find its way to the surface," he said on White and Jordan.
"But whether they have diverging agendas or converging agendas, there's always going to be differences of opinion. It's not about having differences of opinion, it's about how you react to them. It's if you become entranced in ideologies or the principle of who is at the front of the queue."
For Chelsea, full focus remains on qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in the Boehly-Clearlake era. They are currently fourth in the Premier League standings with nine games to go, but the likes of Manchester City and Newcastle United are not too far behind.
