Pep Guardiola believes his team does not deserve any bonuses after an underwhelming campaign.
This comes following the announcement of prize money from FIFA for the revamped Club World Cup,, which Manchester City will be competing in this season.
If City were to triumph over the 31 other teams competing in the United States in July, the club would be in for a healthy £97 million payday.
In usual circumstances, this financial gain would be off the table for the Premier League Champions, particularly during a season of turmoil and despair.
Speaking on the bonus, Pep Guardiola was insistent that his players were undeserving of any extra cash.
“We don’t deserve it this season, we don’t deserve a bonus this season," said Guardiola. "If we go there and win it’s for the club, managers, the staff, the backroom staff. The players, [me], we don’t deserve. Not even a watch.”
The only competition remaining is the FA Cup for Guardiola's side. Perhaps this is a chance for silverware, but they will have to overcome an impressive Bournemouth side in the quarter-final on Sunday.
Spanish head coach Andoni Iraola has grabbed attention and headlines for his impressive style of play on the South Coast. The Cherries sit in 10th and in reach of the European spots in the Premier League.
Their football has also impressed the City head coach: "I would say that they have a specific way to play and it works. They have done so far a really, really good season with a quality of the players they have, but the ideas that they have and of course we are worried."
"It would be boring football if all teams played the same way in all the leagues, so every team plays in their beliefs and their specific ways and they do it well," added the Catalan.
"The team play with beliefs, and specific ways, and they do it really, really well. We play against the team that gave us our first defeat in the Premier League this season [so we will] try to reach a semifinal."
Difficult campaign a 'good lesson'
Financial benefits will encourage the players this summer, but the headline has been written on this season - it has been far below the lofty expectations that Manchester City have raised in England.
Now, Champions League qualification is the only target for the club domestically as this season closes and the next one nears.
Reflecting briefly on his team's performances this season, Pep Guardiola has said he has learnt plenty from the poor results.
“It’s a good lesson for me personally, I learnt a lot, and hopefully the club as well. The qualification for the Champions League would be a huge success. People didn’t believe me, now they believe me."
However, the Catalan is still working game-by-game, and is not considering next season at this stage.
“I’m not thinking about things to implement next year, not at all. I know the players, we know each other, and next season will be next season. I'm not going to practice something for the next season. I’m going to practice for the game we have next.”
