Liverpool lost two games in a row for the first time this season before the international break in both the Carabao Cup and Champions League.
It quickly damaged the Reds’ hopes of winning the treble this season under Arne Slot, as they were previously favourites to win both the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.
They lost to PSG on penalties to get knocked out of Europe at the Round of 16 stage, setting the French side up to play against Aston Villa in the Quarter-finals.

They then went into the international break losing at Wembley to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final, which means they remain trophy-less this season – pinning their hopes on their 12-point lead in the Premier League.
Former Arsenal and Manchester City full-back Bacary Sagna gave one reason as to why he thinks Slot’s side lost both games before the break. Bacary Sagna was speaking to Paddy Power: “It’s unlike Liverpool to lose two games in a row. Against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Liverpool were outplayed in every part of the pitch.
“Against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, it was the one game that they had to turn up at the right time on the right day, which Newcastle did, and Liverpool didn’t. Newcastle were more prepared than Liverpool – they didn’t play in midweek, which may be the reason for fatigue in the Liverpool squad.
“Playing four days before the final could explain the lack of freshness in the team, and playing every three days isn’t easy.”
Should Liverpool have more depth in their squad?
Seeing as Sagna believes that the Reds were too tired in the two games against PSG and Newcastle, there is only one thing that Liverpool can do moving forward, and that is buy bolstering the depth of their squad.
The Reds have significant depth in attack, with a combination of Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa to make a front three out of.
Meanwhile in defence, they lack depth at the back with two full-backs on each side (Alexander-Arnold and Bradley at right back, Tsimikas and Robertson at left-back), and just two backup centre-backs (Jarrell Quansah and Joe Gomez), with Gomez being out injured for a long period.
That depth at the back could be why they were outplayed especially by Newcastle at Wembley, because the defence was likely very tired.
