Naypyidaw: Myanmar state television has announced that at least 144 people were killed and 732 others injured in a powerful earthquake that struck the country on Friday.
Earlier today, Myanmar's ruling military junta declared a state of emergency in several areas following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the country.
The ruling junta said in a statement that Myanmar will conduct rapid assessments of the situation and rescue operations, in addition to providing humanitarian assistance.
The US Geological Survey said that a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar Friday, adding that the quake struck an area 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing City at a depth of 10 kilometers.
