Kansas City Chiefs season to be featured in ESPN docuseries: ‘Remarkable opportunity’

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2024 season is about to get some special treatment.

ESPN announced Friday that it will be producing a six-episode docuseries on KC’s season, which included a 17-3 combined record and appearance in Super Bowl LIX.

The network said the original content was “expected to premiere later this year” on ESPN and Disney+.

“This series will explore the legacy of the Chiefs franchise while also showcasing the emotional highs and lows of building a championship-winning team,” Burke Magnus, ESPN’s president of content, said in a release. “From the brilliance of Patrick Mahomes to the leadership of Andy Reid and the passion of Chiefs Kingdom, this project will showcase the drama, intensity, and heart that make this team a global phenomenon.”

ESPN said the series would be produced by many of the same people who worked on “Last Dance,” a 2020 docuseries centered on NBA star Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls.

The Chiefs films will be produced by Words + Pictures in association with Skydance Sports, NFL Films and others. Friday’s news release also promised the docuseries would weave in the Chiefs’ 65-year history, including when owner Lamar Hunt founded the franchise.

“No team in sports has been more captivating over the last decade than the Kansas City Chiefs,” said Connor Schell, executive producer of Words + Pictures. “To get the chance to go behind-the-scenes of the team’s modern-day dynasty with its signature stars, and weave that story together with the Chiefs’ history and incomparable legacy of Lamar Hunt, whose imprint on the club and the league is still felt every Sunday, is a remarkable opportunity.”

Kristen Lappas of Words + Pictures will direct the Chiefs docuseries.
