The Colorado Buffaloes agreed to a massive five-year, $54 million contract extension with their head coach Deion Sanders on Friday afternoon. And in the process, Sanders joined a prestigious group as a result of this huge new deal that comes in the wake of NFL teams showing interest in the former superstar cornerback.
With his son, star quarterback prospect Shedeur Sanders, heading to the NFL, there were rumors that Deion would follow him, with the Dallas Cowboys in particular showing a great deal of interest in him. However, no deal ever came to fruition, leading to Sanders sticking with Colorado on a long-term deal.
"BREAKING: Colorado's board of regents have approved a new 5-yr, $54 million contract for head coach Deion Sanders that will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country," Brian Howell of Boulder Daily Camera reported.
Sanders has turned the Buffaloes football team into one of the best in the nation, so it's not a surprise they broke the bank to keep him in town. In doing so, Sanders became one of the top five highest-paid head coaches in college football, with his average salary coming in behind only Kirby Smart, Ryan Day, and Dabo Swinney.
"Deion Sanders' new 5 year, $54M contract with Colorado makes him the 4th highest average paid NCAAF coach.
1. Kirby Smart, $13.2M
2. Ryan Day, $12.5M
3. Dabo Swinney, $11.1M
4. Deion Sanders, $10.8M
5. Steve Sarkisian, $10.6M," Spotrac shared in a post on X.

This deal is set to keep Sanders with the Buffaloes through the 2029 campaign. After posting a 4-8 record in his first season in charge of Colorado, Sanders led quite a turnaround in 2024, as the Buffaloes went 9-4, peaking as the No. 16 ranked team in the AP Top 25 poll at one point.
