Reports: Arsenal expected to sign midfielder that rejected Liverpool at the 11th hour last summer

Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Martin Zubimendi appears to have reached its conclusion, with the Spanish midfielder expected to join Arsenal this summer.

Once a prime target for the Reds as they sought to strengthen the no.6 role, Zubimendi ultimately rejected the chance to move to the Premier League last year.

Now, with Mikel Arteta’s side seemingly in pole position, any lingering hopes of a Liverpool revival in the race appear to be fading fast.

Arsenal in control despite Real Madrid links

Fresh reports had suggested that Real Madrid were eyeing a late move to hijack Arsenal’s deal for the Real Sociedad star.

However, respected journalist David Ornstein has dismissed such speculation, insisting that Arsenal remain fully confident in securing Zubimendi’s signature. The Gunners have been working on the transfer for some time, with sporting directors past and present ensuring the move stays on track.

“Without wanting to discredit the reporting of others, Blair, I personally haven’t heard this,”Ornstein said during The Athletic’s Q&A session.

“Arsenal are expecting Zubimendi to join in the summer. I don’t know if that means it is completely done but for some time now they have been working on the basis that he will be coming in and a huge amount of work went into getting them to that point – while Edu was still in position as sporting director and subsequently when Jason Ayto took over on an interim basis.

“Andrea Berta will be starting soon as Edu’s permanent successor, so we will hopefully learn as bit more on that and other areas in due course.”

No regrets for Liverpool?

Liverpool’s midfield situation has evolved since their initial pursuit of Zubimendi.

While there were concerns over the no.6 position in the past, the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch as an outstanding option has lessened the urgency for reinforcements in that area.

The Dutchman’s performances this season have provided the club with a different perspective, and while a player of Zubimendi’s quality would have been a strong addition, Liverpool may no longer feel the same level of need.

With Richard Hughes set to oversee Liverpool’s recruitment this summer, some fans may have hoped that the club would reignite their interest in Zubimendi.

However, barring an unexpected twist, the Spaniard looks destined for the Emirates rather than Anfield. Time will tell if Liverpool were right to move on, or if they’ll be left wondering what could have been.
