De Jong injury fears played down after half-time sub

Frenkie de Jong is expected to be fit for Sunday’s clash with Girona despite going off at half-time of Barcelona’s win over Osasuna.

The Dutchman was named in the starting XI on Thursday night but only played 45 minutes of the game and was replaced by Pablo Torre at half-time.

It appeared to be simply a precautionary move by Hansi Flick - who had already lost Dani Olmo to injury - and he did offer a brief update after the match.

“I hope he doesn’t have anything. It’s not like Dani’s case; I hope he can play on Sunday,” he told reporters afterwards.

Flick will have to manage his squad carefully over the next few weeks with fixtures coming thick and fast both at home and abroad.

He’s also without Marc Casado at present but does have both Lopez and Torre eager for minutes and ready to go.
