Dallas Cowboys send coaches to Texas A&M pro day, will host Shemar Stewart soon

COLLEGE STATION, Texas

Pro Day workouts are off and running this week around the country as all 32 NFL teams are out on the road getting a final glimpse of college players before next month’s NFL Draft.

The Dallas Cowboys have sent various groups of coaches, scouts and personnel around the country this week, headlined by a group featuring head coach Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and vice president of player personnel Will McClay.

That crew was at Ohio State on Wednesday before making the trip back to the Lone Star State to see Texas A&M on Thursday. They will depart from College Station and visit Ole Miss on Friday.

At Texas A&M, the Cowboys were getting a close look at three defensive linemen that could be potential draft picks next month. Defensive lineman Shemar Stewart is considered a consensus top-20 player in the class while Nic Scourton and Shemar Turner are projected as second day selections.

Stewart will head to Frisco next week for a facility visit with the Cowboys. He will be one of 30 players that the Cowboys will be allowed to host ahead of the draft.

“Seeing the Cowboys next week,” Stewart said. “I’ve actually never been to Dallas. I’ve only been to Arlington. That’s going to be an experience. I’m going to tour the facility, they say everything is bigger in Texas. We’ll see.”

Dallas holds the No. 12 selection in the first round. While a pick on the defensive line may not be as likely as other positions such as wide receiver or cornerback, the Cowboys are devoting resources toward the possibility of calling Stewart’s name on draft day to pair him with star defensive end Micah Parsons.

“Obviously, I’ll have to go through the learning curve going from college to the pros,” Stewart said. “I’ll have to sit back and take notes from [Parsons]. If we get together, it could be a crazy one-two punch on the D-line.”

One of the knocks on Stewart’s draft stock has been his lack of sack production at the college level. Despite just 4.5 sacks in three seasons, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko says to watch the tape to see how he impacts games.

“The way he impacts games is immeasurable,” Elko said. “I don’t think you can just look at sack numbers. I think I read somewhere where he had about a third of the amount of one-on-one pass-rush opportunities this year because of double teams, chips, seven-man protections, screens. People went against those kids with the plan of how to not allow them to impact the game. If you pick up a piece of paper and just look at production, I don’t think that tells the whole story. I think the NFL sees that.”

Scourton said that he has nine facility visits before the draft. He’s already seen the Arizona Cardinals and will see the Houston Texans on Thursday and Friday. He said the Cowboys are not one of his trips.

Turner will be eligible for Dallas’ local day where the Cowboys can host any prospect that graduated high school in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The DeSoto product would see the Cowboys on April 4 if he accepts an invite. He did not speak with the media on Thursday after his Pro Day workout.

The draftable prospects at Ohio State that the Cowboys contingency saw on Wednesday included offensive tackle Josh Simmons, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson, quarterback Will Howard, defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau, defensive end Jack Sawyer, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams and offensive lineman Donovan Jackson.

On Friday, the Cowboys will see prospects at Ole Miss that include cornerback Trey Amos, wide receiver Tre Harris, quarterback Jaxson Dart, defensive end Princely Umanmielen, defensive tackle Walter Nolen and defensive end Jared Ivey.
