The Tennessee Titans were the worst team in the NFL last year, so major changes were expected when Mike Borgonzi took over as the general manager this season. However, Borgonzi came under fire for not retaining former All-Pro punter Ryan Stonehouse, who spoke to reporters earlier this week about the move.
"I was surprised," said Stonehouse. "I think a lot of other people were as well. I truly didn't expect it. I'm a guy that I like to be where my feet are. Been training in that building ever since I stepped foot in it three years ago. I thought it would be a little bit different; just more clarity would have been nice."
Tennessee brought in legendary special teams coach John Fassel this offseason, and the veteran coach must not have seen Stonehouse's value. In his three years with the franchise, he averaged 52.2 yards per punt and pinned opposing teams inside their own 20-yard line 37% of the time, according to Pro Football Reference.
Stonehouse did land on his feet this offseason as he signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins worth $1.725 million. He will remain in the AFC for at least this season, but he will not get the chance to face his old team, barring a playoff matchup. However, it sounds like he'll be ready to prove Borgonzi and the front office wrong the next chance he gets.
