Tottenham duo called out for ‘disappointing’ season as they fall well short of expected numbers

Dominic Solanke has not fired goals at a consistent rate in his debut season at Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur smashed their club transfer record to sign Dominic Solanke in a £65million deal from Premier League rivals Bournemouth during last summer’s transfer window.

It was a display of ambition from Daniel Levy, snapping up the English striker after a productive 2023/24 campaign that saw him score 19 Premier League goals for Bournemouth. The 27-year-old, though, has not managed to hit the lofty expectations of the Spurs fans at White Hart Lane.

While Dominic Solanke has proven a good fit in Ange Postecoglou’s system and impressed with his pressing, work ethic, link-up and hold-up play, he has netted just seven goals in 20 Premier League appearances thus far. It has to be considered that the Reading-born star has had to miss action for more than a month with an unfortunate knee injury suffered in a training session.

Overall, though, Solanke has not been a regular source of goals which continues to be frustrating for a certain section of the Tottenham fanbase. Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King also remains disappointed with how the England international’s first season in North London has panned out so far, expressing his perplexity over his selection for recent World Cup Qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

“Big-money signings from these clubs [Bournemouth and Everton] are not guaranteed to give you results, as we’ve seen with Solanke and Richarlison,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“We should have been looking for 30 goals between the two of them, minimum. That is the only way Tottenham are going to have success. However, it has been a disappointing season for Richarlison and a disappointing first season for Solanke.

“I know he was picked for England, but I’m still trying to work out how that happened.”

Ange Postecoglou will expect Solanke to stay fit and score goals consistently for the remainder of the season

It has not been a great first season at N17 for Solanke, who being a striker will be purely judged on goals at the end of the day. The ex-Liverpool man brings a lot more than just goals to the floor, but Tottenham have shelled out big money to sign him from Bournemouth to lead their attack and score goals consistently.

A knee injury ruined his rhythm, ruling him out of action for more than a month. His absence was dearly felt as Ange’s side struggled to create and score goals freely. One cannot be overly critical of Solanke here as he has come into a new club and is still adapting to how Ange wants the team to play. Plus, the injury crisis has massively impacted the entire squad, prohibiting the team from developing in the Australian’s second season.

Back from international duty, where he did not play any minutes against Albania and Latvia, Solanke’s entire focus should be on staying fit, scoring goals regularly and ending his debut season at Tottenham on a high note.
