The Baltimore Ravens [announced today on X](https://x.com/Ravens/status/1905739696292168104) that they have agreed to a three-year contract extension with head coach John Harbaugh.
Harbaugh, like Mike Tomlin, is one of the longest-tenured head coaches in the league with the same team. He joined the Ravens in 2008 and is entering his 18th season as their head coach. He is just one year behind Tomlin, who is entering his 19th season as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach. It’s no wonder why they are one of the top rivalries in all of sports with two iconic head coaches at the helm.
Harbaugh is 172-104 (.623) in the regular season and 13-11 (.542) in the postseason with one Super Bowl ring to his name. It isn’t the same story as the Steelers, but Harbaugh and the Ravens have received criticism from the Baltimore fanbase and the media about their lack of playoff success with Lamar Jackson as the quarterback. If you look at the replies to the Ravens’ announcement, there are plenty of disgruntled fans about their lack of playoff success, much like you’d see under a similar post about Tomlin.
Tomlin was extended for three seasons last year, and his rival counterpart now also has a brand new contract. Tomlin’s contract was reportedly for [$50 million over three years](https://steelersdepot.com/2025/01/dulac-mike-tomlin-2024-contract-extension-worth-50-million/). I wouldn’t be surprised if Harbaugh’s comes in at roughly the same range given their similar resumes.
Tomlin and Harbaugh have coached against each other the second-most times of any head coach pair in league history. Including the playoff matchup in the Wild Card round, Tomlin and Harbaugh have faced each other 38 times. In those 38 games, Tomlin is 21-17 against Harbaugh. Up until the end of last season, the Ravens had a long drought without a win against the Steelers.
These two coaches will be linked together in the NFL history books, and neither franchise has shown any signs of moving on.
