Report: Liverpool make contact over free agent striker but £120m man is their priority

Liverpool have reached out over a potential summer move for Jonathan David, but a report suggests the Lille striker may not be heading to Anfield despite the club’s initial interest.

With multiple top sides, including Manchester United, also monitoring the situation, competition for his signature is intensifying.

David’s free agent status sparks widespread interest

The 25-year-old Canadian international has been one of the most lethal strikers in Europe for several years.

This season alone, he has produced 23 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances, following up on an impressive 26-goal, 8-assist campaign in 2023/24.

With his Lille contract set to expire this summer, David’s availability on a free transfer has put him on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Liverpool have made contact but a deal is uncertain

According to The i Paper, Liverpool have made contact with David’s representatives, but negotiations are not yet advanced. The Reds have yet to fully commit to a deal, and their pursuit of a different type of striker could see them look elsewhere.

Liverpool are not alone in their interest. Man United, Tottenham, West Ham, Chelsea, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and Juventus have all been linked with David.

While United have made enquiries, the striker is not viewed as a priority signing for Ruben Amorim, reducing the chances of a move to Old Trafford.

Tottenham also showed interest in David last summer, but the forward chose to remain at Lille for another year to give himself more options as a free agent.

Liverpool focusing on Alexander Isak instead?

Despite their contact with David, The i Paper claims that Liverpool are prioritising an out-and-out number nine, with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak emerging as their ‘top target’.

Newcastle are reportedly confident of keeping Isak, particularly if they manage to secure a Champions League spot for next season.

However, Liverpool have identified multiple striker options, with David now among their considerations.

TEAMtalk also reported in February that Liverpool are very keen on Isak, and the Swedish forward himself is open to a move to Anfield.

David drawn to West Ham, unconvinced by Chelsea

Meanwhile, The i Paper reports that David’s representatives have been impressed by what Graham Potter is building at West Ham United, potentially making the Hammers a strong contender for his signature.

Conversely, a move to Chelsea appears unlikely, as the striker is reportedly unimpressed by the number of forwards already at the club.

While Liverpool’s interest in David is clear, his future remains uncertain, with Anfield not necessarily his most likely destination.

As the Reds assess their striker options, the summer window could see them make a decisive move – whether for David, Isak, or another top forward to strengthen Arne Slot’s attacking options.
