A new rumor has emerged about what the Dallas Cowboys will have to fork over to hold on to superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons. And it could eventually force a trade that sends Parsons or another expensive star out of Big D.
The NFL has evolved in a major way over the last 20 years. For decades, running the ball was a key part of success. It boosted the value of running backs and offensive linemen. As well as the interior defensive linemen and linebackers that had to chase them down. However, passing is the name of the game in today’s NFL.
The quarterback spot is the undisputed top position on the field. It has also boosted the value of star wide receivers and, of course, the elite pass rushers making QBs’ lives difficult. Right now, there is no better pass rusher in the league than Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons.
In his first four seasons, he has earned trips to the Pro Bowl every year. Has racked up 52.5 sacks (12 or more each season) and was even an MVP candidate in 2023. That is why his next contract is a huge story in Dallas. He is in the final year of his rookie deal and stands to get a huge pay increase. But what will the 25-year-old ask for in his next pact?
On Friday, Dallas News Cowboys reporter Calvin Watkins reported Parson will ask the Cowboys for a deal worth $200 million and pay him just over $40 million annually.
Could Micah Parsons’ asking price force a blockbuster Dallas Cowboys trade?
After getting an extension this spring, Cleveland Browns superstar Myles Garrett is the highest-paid defensive player in history. His four-year, $160 million deal will pay him $40 million per season. The Cowboys star is looking for a little extra so he can make history for defensive players.
While he probably deserves it based on current market value, it puts Dallas in a tough spot. They already have Dak Prescott making a huge sum of money. Soon, extensions to CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs will kick in. They already have cap limitations before Parsons could make close to double of what he is making in 2025 with this extension.
There have already been NFL rumors about the Cowboys considering a Micah Parsons trade. This asking price could make them look harder at the option. There is also another route. And that would be to move Prescott. There have also been murmurs about him being traded as well.
If he continues to fall short of being an elite QB, Dallas will have to realize that he is more a part of the problem than the answer and could decide to get his money off their bloated payroll.
