The Newcastle United flag remains proudly flying over Alnwick Castle ahead of celebrations to mark the club's first domestic silverware in 70 years.

The flag was put up ahead of the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, March 16, in which Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 for a first major trophy since the Fairs Cup in 1969. Statues on Alnwick Castle's Barbican, from which the Duke of Northumberland throws the ball for each year's Shrove Tuesday Football game, have been adorned with Newcastle United scarves too.

The Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, who live in the castle, are huge Newcastle United fans - though it's not clear if they will be joining the parade in Newcastle city centre and the Town Moor on Saturday.

Of the flag, Daniel Watkins, head of learning at Alnwick Castle, said: "It's been put up in hope several times but it's never been able to stay up because of a victory. Statues around the scarves is a new one!"

Alnwick Castle isn't the only stately home to show its support for the Toon, with the bull statues at the entrance of the Blagdon Estate near Cramlington also painted black and white.
