Depot After Dark: Metcalf Working, Heyward’s Funny Realization, Freiermuth At Penn State

A Steelers Depot daily segment. A quick hit of some Pittsburgh Steelers-related stories that may not require a complete article but nuggets worth mentioning and passing on to you guys.

Your Depot After Dark for March 28.

METCALF WORKING

The Steelers’ big acquisition this year didn’t come in free agency. Instead, they made a splash trade for DK Metcalf. He gives them an instant upgrade at wide receiver, although they still need a quarterback. However, it looks like Metcalf isn’t letting his big payday slow his work ethic.

On their Twitter account, the Steelers shared a recent video of Metcalf working out. Sometimes when players receive huge contracts, they might get comfortable and not work as hard. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Metcalf. He’s staying in great shape, looking to make a big impact with his new team. Hopefully, the Steelers can find someone to throw him the ball soon.

HEYWARD FUNNY REALIZATION

Cam Heyward is one of the best players in Steelers history. He’ll probably find himself in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day. Heyward’s success shouldn’t be a huge surprise, though. He does come from a strong football bloodline. His father, Craig “Ironhead” Heyward was an NFL running back from 1988 to 1998. Heyward seemed to have a funny realization recently about his path to the NFL.

Heyward took to Twitter to share that he just realized he’s a “nepo baby.” That term refers to children who has benefited from their family, hence the nepotism label. While Heyward’s name might help familiarize him with certain people, it’s certainly not the reason he’s made it this far. He’s built his own legacy beyond just his name.

FREIERMUTH AT PENN STATE

Last year, Pat Freiermuth received a big extension from the Steelers. It showed that they’re committed to him as their starting tight end for the foreseeable future. He had a solid 2024 season, too, recording seven touchdowns. It looks like he’s taken a recent trip back to his alma mater.

Tyler Donohue took to Twitter and shared a picture of Freiermuth at Penn State’s Pro Day. Of course, Penn State is where Freiermuth honed his skills in college. In the picture, he can be seen talking to Tyler Warren, another former Penn State tight end. Warren is slated to be one of the top players in this year’s draft class. It looks like he’ll have Freiermuth to use as a resource in his NFL career.
