Ruben Amorim favourite vetoes Manchester United transfer; lack of trophies cited

Viktor Gyokeres does not believe Manchester United can offer his a shot a glory

Manchester United are desperately looking at the upcoming summer transfer window as the opportunity to turn their fortunes and strengthen the team to start getting back to glory days. They have struggled a lot this season due to the inconsistency in scoring goals. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to provide them with that and hence the Red Devils need a world-class signing.

Caught Offside and other sources had earlier stated that United would want to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gykeres. The Swede has also worked under Ruben Amorim and hence the manager is displaying interest in bringing him to Old Trafford. Currently, he is one of the best strikers in the world and a lot of clubs are interested in signing the Sporting striker.

Journalist Duncan Castles has told Football Transfers podcast that the player has rejected United because he wants to take the next big step in his career and wants to play for a club that provide him with consistent opportunities to win big trophies. Currently, United won’t be able to provide him with that. Moreover, his agent has asked the fee to be lowered from €80 million to €60-70 million.

According to journalist Duncan Castles, speaking to Football Transfers, Viktor Gyokeres has turned down a move to Manchester United as he seeks the next major step in his career—one that includes competing regularly for top honours. At this stage, United simply cannot offer the consistency or silverware he desires. In addition, reports suggest that his agent has requested a reduction in the striker’s release clause, pushing for a fee in the region of €60–70 million rather than the originally quoted €80 million.

He wants to go to a club where he can prove himself, where he can win trophies, and his assessment of where Manchester United are at the moment is that is not the option to take in a summer where he’ll be turning 27. He’s going to look at the clubs that are making him offers and pick the one that he thinks is the best place to demonstrate his time in England in the lower division and at Brighton weren’t an accurate representation of his abilities as a player, and that what he’s done in Portugal can be replicated in the English League or elsewhere in Europe. He will be available this summer. Sporting have a gentleman’s agreement that he can leave for around €80m. What I’m hearing is that his agents will try and push that fee down to €60-70m.

Castles said on The Transfers Podcast.

Viktor Gyokeres is a striker who’s got fans talking, and it’s easy to see why. The Sporting CP star blends brute strength with silky skill—think a bulldozer with a ballerina’s touch. His frame dominates defenders, holding up play or shrugging them off in duels, while his sharp movement in the box makes him a poacher’s dream.

Ruben Amorim helped develop Viktor Gyokeres into a serial goalscorer at Sporting CP.

Gyokeres is a lethal finisher with both feet, striking the ball with precision and power. His intelligent movement, whether drifting into wide channels or making sharp runs in behind, constantly keeps defenders on edge.

Combine that with a playmaker’s vision and an insatiable hunger for goals, and you have the makings of a complete forward who continues to prove he’s the real deal.

Gyokeres has scored 28 goals in 25 matches so far in the Liga NOS 2024/2025 season. Overall, his goals scored per 90 minutes is 1.21. Moreover, Gyokeres’s total G/A (goals + assists) is 33 for this season. His goal involvement equates to 1.43 per 90 minutes. Gyokeres’ non-penalty xG per 90 minutes is 0.82.

What does this mean for the Red Devils?

Surely, this one will sting for Manchester United fans. Rúben Amorim clearly recognised Gyökeres’ quality and was eager to bring him to Old Trafford. As one of the most in-form strikers in world football right now, Gyökeres could have been the answer to United’s ongoing goalscoring woes.

But the message from the player is clear, he has no intention of wasting his prime years. He wants to compete at the highest level and be part of a project that challenges for major honours every season, something United have struggled to guarantee in recent years.
