Man United monitoring striker that nearly joined Chelsea

Manchester United travel to The City Ground to face high-flying Nottingham Forest when the Premier League returns on April 1.

The Red Devils have endured a dismal campaign so far, with Ruben Amorim having replaced Erik ten Hag as head coach midway through the season.

At present United sit 13th in the Premier League table and they are therefore set to miss out on qualification for European football next term.

Amorim will be well aware that his side’s best opportunity to qualify for Europe next season will be by winning the Europa League, with a quarter-final tie against French side Lyon up next.

Off the pitch, it appears that United are keeping tabs on a player that previously came close to joining rivals Chelsea.

As per CaughtOffside, the Manchester club have been monitoring Porto striker Samu Aghehowa.

The 20-year-old joined Porto from Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid last summer, having been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Since moving to Portugal, the forward has netted 20 times in 34 games across all competitions, and his impressive form has attracted interest from the hierarchy at Old Trafford.

The report claims that fellow Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are also monitoring the Spain international, while German giants Bayern Munich and Spanish side Barcelona are both also credited with an interest in the player.

Aghehowa is under contract with Porto until the end of the 2028/29 campaign, having signed a long-term deal with the Portuguese giants when joining the club last summer.

United have spent heavily in attack over the past couple of years – most notably signing Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund – but the pair have both struggled in front of goal this term and it appears that those in charge of the club’s recruitment are eyeing further additions to Amorim’s squad this summer.
