'He'll have to suffer' - Portuguese manager warns Ruben Amorim needs time before things change at Man Utd

Portuguese manager Pedro Martins has warned Ruben Amorim that he will have to continue suffering before things change for the better at Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim was appointed Manchester United manager in November after winning two league titles during his time at Sporting CP, where he built a team that excited most of Europe earlier this season, especially when they beat Manchester City 4-1 in the group stages.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe met with several managers during the summer before Ineos decided to give Erik ten Hag a one-year extension.

United went into the 2024/25 campaign with higher expectations, but results worsened and Ten Hag was dismissed. Those results have yet to improve under Amorim as the Reds remain in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

It has not been an easy start to life at Old Trafford for Amorim, although United fans are backing him to the hill, singing his name to the tune of “Give It Up” by KC and the Sunshine Band on the terraces each week.

Ruben Amorim sent “suffer” warning at Manchester United

United started to build a bit of momentum prior to the March international break.

The Reds are unbeaten in their last four matches across all competitions and they’re looking for a third consecutive victory when they take on Nottingham Forest in the league on Tuesday night.

There is still a chance for Amorim’s side to go all the way in the Europa League after drawing Lyon in the quarter-finals. This means Europe’s second-rate competition is likely to become United’s priority objective as it’s the only route back into the Champions League.

However, Amorim has been warned there will be more suffering at United this season.

Al-Gharafa manager Pedro Martins, formerly of Olympiacos, has told his compatriot that things will continue to be up-and-down for United until things change.

“Ruben Amorim has been more difficult, he joined halfway through, a club with huge demands and probably a squad that isn’t up to the standard of a team that wants to be champions,” Martins told Flashscore.

“He’ll have to suffer this year, prepare the team, next year build a new team with his model, with players with his identity and then we’ll see.

“At Sporting, he was brilliant. In England, as a result of what I said before, he needs more time.”

Amorim linked with £50m Portugal star Trincao

United’s head coach is looking for stars who can help implement his 3-4-2-1 system, with several members of the current squad not up to the task.

One area of concern is the right wing-back spot and we already know Geovany Quenda won’t be signing for United after agreeing to join Chelsea in the summer of 2026.

United are now eyeing a move for Trincao, who plays with Quenda at Sporting CP and previously had a loan spell at Wolves.

According to The Sun, Sporting are prepared to demand more than Trinaco’s £50 million release clause. This comes with the assumption that any deal would be paid for through instalments.

Several Portuguese stars have told Trinaco to join United later this year, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

Only time will tell if Trincao becomes a Red.
