Former Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville has explained the reason behind his 'sleeping' celebration. Summerville left United last summer to complete a £25million move to West Ham in the Premier League.
The forward scored 19 goals for Leeds in the Championship last term, 21 in all competitions, which helped him earn his move to the London Stadium.
It was during his impressive run of goalscoring form that Summerville began performing a new celebration. After finding the back of the net, the former Leeds star would rest his head on both of his hands and close his eyes.
Summerville was named the Championship Player of the Year last term and won the PFA Player of the Year award for the Championship, thanks to his performances for Leeds last season.
The 23-year-old has now explained the reason behind his celebration was down to not feeling appreciated despite his goalscoring form.
“I felt that people were sleeping on me [at Leeds United] because I thought it was my time last season, so my celebration came from that," said Summerville in a recent Q&A with West Ham's club website.
"I scored many goals, but people still didn’t appreciate it, and that’s why I did the celebration. I kept it because kids and people, they loved it, so now I’m just doing it.”
Since leaving Elland Road, Summerville has found it more difficult to find the back of the net for West Ham. The Netherlands Under-21 international has just one goal to his name this season, which came in a win over Manchester United in the Premier League back in October.
He has managed only seven starts for West Ham this season and has recently been struggling with a thigh injury. It's possible that Summerville could go up against Leeds next season, should United secure promotion to the Premier League.
Daniel Farke's side are in second place, three points behind Sheffield United, as they prepare to face Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.
