The 2025/26 campaign will see Arne Slot review Liverpool’s captaincy situation.
There is still doubt over the future of Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool and should the Dutch defender leave Anfield, Slot will need to select a new skipper ahead of next season.
Many expect the centre-back to remain on Merseyside and when he does leave, Trent Alexander-Arnold was the man set to take over from the 33-year-old as the leader of the current Premier League leaders.
However, Alexander-Arnold looks set to join Real Madrid this summer and as a result, Slot will need to select a new vice-captain to help Van Dijk lead his squad of players.
There are some obvious contenders for the role, so here are the three best options Slot should select for the vice-captain role at Liverpool.

With 32 goals and 22 assists to his name this season, there is no doubting the importance of Mohamed Salah to Liverpool. The Egyptian has been the Reds’ main man ever since arriving from Roma in 2017 and the hope is that journey continues next season and beyond.
Salah is out of contract at Liverpool this summer, however, the Merseyside club are hopeful of agreeing new terms with the winger. Should that happen, the 32-year-old is an obvious choice to take over the vice-captain role from Alexander-Arnold.
The Egyptian is already a leader in the Liverpool dressing room and captains his country, which gives him experience in the role.

Salah also does his leading with actions, both on and off the pitch, which is always a big benefit for younger players, who mostly learn from watching, rather than listening.

With the future of Liverpool in mind, Alexis Mac Allister would be a great choice for Slot to appoint as the Reds’ vice-captain as it would ensure a smooth transition to the captain’s role once Van Dijk calls time on his career at Anfield.
The World Cup winner was promoted to Liverpool’s leadership group at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, which shows that the Argentina star is already being viewed by Slot as a potential future captain at Liverpool.
The 26-year-old has had some amazing experiences in his career, which he often calls upon when things get tough on the field of play, and the midfielder is certainly a leader who leads by action with his attitude on the pitch.
For a character that seems quiet and shy, Mac Allister is a fiery character once he steps over the white line, with all of this making the Argentina international a great choice for the vice-captain role at Liverpool.

Like many at Liverpool, there is doubt over Ibrahima Konate’s future at Anfield as the defender is out of contract with the Merseyside club in 2026.
Real Madrid are one club interested in Konate, however, the centre-back is a player the Merseyside cannot afford to let go as the French star is the future of the Reds’ defence.
Should Liverpool agree new terms with the 25-year-old, the French star is a strong contender for the vice-captain role in Slot’s squad, while also being a long-term captain option.
Konate is loved in the Liverpool dressing room and having already worn the armband for France, the centre-back has some experience in the role, which makes the defender a good overall choice to step up as a leader on Merseyside.
