Aston Villa academy product Aaron Ramsey has had a rather luckless time since leaving Villa Park on a permanent basis.
After fruitful spells on loan with Championship outfits Norwich City and Middlesbrough - particularly in the latter where he helped to inspire a play-off push under Michael Carrick - Ramsey left Villa for good in the summer of 2023 when he joined newly promoted Burnley.
Under Vincent Kompany, who sanctioned the £12m move to Turf Moor, Ramsey was exposed to Premier League football - that was until February of last year, when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in a heavy defeat to Arsenal.
Indeed it was more than season-ending - Ramsey missed the remainder of 2024 and has, up to now, still been unavailable to Kompany's successor Scott Parker with the Clarets aiming to return to the top flight at the first time of asking.
There was a breakthrough this past week, though; Ramsey, the younger brother of Jacob, played 45 minutes in Burnley under 21s' 2-0 win over their Birmingham City counterparts on Friday afternoon.
His appearance brought to an end 406-day period in which Ramsey has gone without football, since suffering that fateful knee injury against the Gunners 13 months earlier.
Burnley are currently third in the Championship, enjoying a remarkable campaign in which they've lost just twice and conceded only 11 goals in 38 matches, and they remain firmly in contention for an automatic promotion spot.
Ramsey, who only has 17 Burnley appearances to his name, is in a race against time to feature for the club before the season's end - although their potential participation in the play-offs would extend the season and hand the midfielder a better chance of making a return this term.
