Angus Kinnear is on a mission to strengthen the recruitment team at Everton ahead of taking charge as their new CEO.

The Friedkin Group have struck a deal to rope in Kinnear from Leeds United in one of their biggest decisions since the takeover in December.

With Kevin Thelwell leaving his role as the director of football at the end of the season, Kinnear is set to work closely with David Moyes to decide on transfers when he takes office on 1 June.

This comes amid news that Everton are transitioning from a model dependent on a solitary director of football to a system revolving around a specialist recruitment team, meaning they would further need to strengthen their backroom staff.

Kinnear could bring more allies from Leeds after Nick Hammond

Kinnear is already laying the groundwork for that as he is plotting to take Nick Hammond with him to Everton.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Hammond has been working as a freelance transfer consultant for Leeds since June 2023, but reduced the number of hours he works there in November.

The transfer guru is now in frame for a player trading and negotiating role with the Merseyside-based club ahead of a summer that could see over 10 players leave Moyes’ squad.

Assessing the possibility of Hammond joining Kinnear at Everton, Joe Thomas pointed out that it is common practice for senior figures to take their allies with them when they move clubs.

The Liverpool Echo journalist went on to claim that Kinnear may raid Leeds for more backroom figures.

“Hammond is someone who has worked with him [Kinnear], mainly over transfers”, Thomas said on the Royal Blue podcast (28 March).

“I think he’s been doing it as a bit of a freelance consultancy kind of role over recent times.

“We know that when people move over to different clubs, they tend to have people that they trust, and people they trust tend to be people that they have worked with in the past.

“So, I don’t think that’ll be the end of links that we see to Leeds, either.”

Everton poised for summer of change

The Friedkins will be keen to get their recruitment team in place as soon as possible, as the departures at Everton could hit double figures this summer.

Moyes is facing a major upheaval in his squad, with contracts of 13 players set to expire at the end of the season.

Therefore, Kinnear has his work cut out for him even before he officially becomes a Toffees employee.

Considering the size of the task ahead, the former Arsenal official will surely be relieved to have Hammond alongside him.
