'I love it' - Morgan Gibbs White's latest Wolves dig shouldn't come as a surprise

Morgan Gibbs-White’s decision to join Nottingham Forest in 2022 still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

The attacking midfielder was one of the Old Gold’s highest potential players but moved to the City Ground in a deal worth up to £42.5 million.

Now very much part of the Forest first team, Gibbs-White continues to remind Wolves fans what they could’ve had…

Morgan Gibbs-White makes hypocritical Wolves dig

Discussing recently why he doesn’t shy away from celebrating when the ball hits the back of the net, Gibbs-White said: “I think if you’re at a place for a long, long time and you ended on good terms then I think maybe not.

“The first couple of seasons, or first season [it’s okay not to celebrate] and then you’ve got to enjoy scoring goals.”

The problem with the midfielder’s statement is that despite saying players shouldn’t celebrate against former clubs for a ‘couple of seasons’, Gibbs-White celebrated his first goal against Wolves just 18 months after leaving Molineux.

The Englishman netted during a 2-2 draw at the City Ground at the end of the 2023-24 season and quickly taunted the travelling support by gesturing toward his ears and kissing the Forest badge.

Hugely contradictory, Gibbs-White’s attempt to backtrack mid-sentence won’t fool Wolves fans.

No love lost

While the majority of fans don’t begrudge players progressing in their careers, it feels like Gibbs-White can’t help but take subtle digs at his former club and their struggles since his departure.

From the player’s perspective, it is a nice feeling to prove critics wrong, but fans won’t appreciate being baited into thinking he has suddenly become conscious of not angering his old supporters. His actions, especially after his first goal, were the complete opposite.

Since joining Forest, Gibbs-White has scored a total of 16 goals and registered 27 assists in 107 games in all competitions. His contributions earned him his first senior England call-up under Lee Carsley last year.
