Trent Alexander-Arnold hit the headlines on Tuesday when it emerged that Real Madrid are working on finalising a deal to sign him on a free transfer. The ECHO understands that the defender is continuing to consider whether to accept an offer from the Spanish giants

Liverpool have also been in talks with the 26-year-old over extending his deal. But while the Reds have not given up hope of persuading Alexander-Arnold to sign a new deal, they are pressing ahead with contingency plans should the England international depart.

And Liverpool ECHO readers, commenting on the ECHO website, have been having their say on the latest claims about Alexander-Arnold and his Anfield future.

Zanderalex said: "For over 60 years, I've seen great players come and go. Liverpool always finds replacements. Souness, Rush, Owen, Hansen, and so on. I'm glad my dad chose the Reds all those years ago. Good luck, Trent. Thanks for passing through."

SeanCran believes: "It’s a crime we have one of the best right backs in the world and a homegrown talent leaving on a free. If I was to choose one of the three players to stay, it would have to be VVD, he is irreplaceable. I think the nail in the coffin for TAA was the emergence of Conor Bradley and the fact he would not play every week. I thought two years ago, he would have transitioned into Centre midfield, but that did not transpire. Good luck Trent, we will miss your creative passing and the fact we were cheering on one of our own."

DaretoDream stated: "For me, we’ve had far better right backs in my lifetime, Phil Neal, Chris Lawler and Steve Nicol who were great in all facets of play. I’m sure Rob Jones would have been up there too but for the issue with shin splints. They were all replaced and we continued winning. So if Trent goes, it will be thanks and goodbye, but the club will go on."

Kevlasvegas remarked: "Well, the cat has been finally let of the bag with TAA hitting the road after months of speculation and uncertainly. Bad timing for this to come out now as we are just about to start the title run in. The injuries have been piling up more and more in recent times. He will soon find out that being at Real Madrid is not going to be a bed of roses and he will not get the love and affection shown here."

AAT66 said: "The most annoying part of this is the fact he’s going on a free !! Don’t know why he wants to go there coz out league is the best there is. He’s always stated he wants to be captain one day and now he’s walking away. Let’s hope he enjoys the beach volleyball with Jude oz the grass ain’t always greener. Just look at other players that have gone thinking everything will be rosy only for them to waste their careers."
