St. John's wing RJ Luis to enter the transfer portal, NBA Draft

Fresh off Big East Player of the Year honors, St. John's wing RJ Luis will enter the transfer portal and the 2025 NBA Draft, sources confirmed to 247Sports. Luis will have one season of college eligibility remaining.

Jonathan Givony and DraftExpress were the first to report.

A 6-foot-7, 215-pound wing, Luis started 32 games this season for St. John's and averaged 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from three.

Luis scored in double figures in all but one game he played during the 2024-25 season. He scored over 20 points 14 times and notched a season high 30 points against Villanova in January.

Luis should gain major portal interest from college basketball programs across the country.

Luis started his career at UMass before transferring to St. John's ahead of the 2023-24 season and head coach Rick Pitino's arrival. He spent two seasons with the Red Storm.

A Florida native, Luis was a 247Sports three-star prospect ranked No. 232 overall. He played his high school ball at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Fla. before spending a final prep year at Mt. Zion Prep in Maryland during the 2021-22 season.

The transfer portal opened Monday, the day after the second round of the NCAA Tournament. There was a continued push to move the window back so it doesn't overlap with March Madness, so the 2025 window was moved back a bit.

"Another big change with the schedule is the shortened window. Last year, it was 45 days. This year, it is just 30 days. It will close April 22," Branham writes. "The shortening was done for multiple reasons. The longer it's open, the more fluidity and instability it brings. Coaches and schools want more stability and more predictability. They want answers on transfers sooner to know what they are working with on their rosters for the upcoming season."

Several coaches have voiced their displeasure with the portal window, including Arkansas' John Calipari.

"When does it open, the portal? This Monday? Welcome to my world," Calipari said after the Razorbacks' second-round win over St. John's. "So Monday, we're really preparing for a game and we're having individual meetings about, 'are you coming back? What are you doing?' You know, if they put their name in the portal, they probably don't have an option to come back, (but) you care about the kids.

"At the end of the year, it's all about them. Whatever they choose, you want to go pro? You want to come back or go somewhere else? It's their choice. I've always been that way, but it's getting harder to be that way."
