The son of Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand has joined seventh-tier side Havant and Waterlooville for the remainder of the season.

Lorenz Ferdinand, 18, is a goalkeeper in Brighton & Hove Albion's academy where he has progressed through the ranks. He will now spend the final weeks of the campaign on work experience with the Hawks as he continues to hone his craft.

In a statement, the Hampshire-based side said: "Havant and Waterlooville Football Club are thrilled to announce that goalkeeper Lorenz Ferdinand, has joined on Work Experience [loan] from Premier League outfit Brighton for the remainder of the season.

"Ferdinand, 18, came through the set-up at Brighton, where he now continues to refine his trade in their set-up. Lorenz links up with Shaun North's side for the run-in as the push towards the end of the season continues! We welcome Lorenz to the Hawks and look forward to seeing him in action very soon."

In Premier League 2 this season, Ferdinand has made just a single appearance for the Seagulls, when he featured in their 4-2 victory against Southampton. This will be the youngster's first taste of senior football as he looks to follow in the footsteps of his father.

Rio touched down at Old Trafford from Leeds United in 2002 and went on to make over 450 appearances for the club before he departed on a free transfer to QPR in 2014 - and then retired a year later in 2015. During his time at Old Trafford, the defender won six league titles - as well as the Champions League in 2008.

Lorenz is the eldest of Rio's five children.
