New Team Emerges in Potential Kevin Durant Trade Sweepstakes

The Phoenix Suns may have made a massive mistake.

At the trade deadline, the club was quite eager to make an aggressive move. It started with a hot pursuit of Jimmy Butler, who was forcing his way out of the Miami Heat organization.

When there were a handful of roadblocks in striking such a deal, Mat Ishbia's squad then seemingly made Kevin Durant available.

Evidently, Phoenix has had a wildly underwhelming season considering the talent on the squad. Outside of Durant, the club has a prime Devin Booker -- the franchise superstar -- and Bradley Beal.

As of late, the duo of Durant and Booker has looked brilliant while Beal has been sidelined with an injury, showing what could be if the team constructed the roster properly.

However, it could be too little, too late. The Suns are 35-39 and trail the Dallas Mavericks by one game for the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference.

They are on the outside looking in on the Play-In Tournament, which is just abysmal considering the expectations they held entering the season.

Now, teams are ready to pounce on a Durant trade considering how the club handled the deadline and falling way short of expectations.

Surprise team enters potential Durant sweepstakes

There are going to be plenty of teams linked to a Durant trade this offseason. The Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves are two teams often brought up as potential suitors.

However, recently, Clutchpoints' Brett Siegel added a new potential suitor for the superstar forward.

"There have been whispers among league personnel about the possibility of the Spurs pursuing Durant and creating the best offensive trio in the league next to Fox and Wembanyama," Siegel reported.

Evidently, if it's not the Suns, the Spurs would be an interesting landing spot for Durant.

He would be able to pull back on doing the dirty work, leaning into his uber-efficient style of play while Victor Wembanyama leads the way.

Pairing him with Chris Paul -- a legendary guard and elite playmaker -- would make his life much easier, too.
