Liverpool to battle Chelsea for Frenkie de Jong?

Liverpool could go head-to-head with Chelsea in the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer, according to Fichajes.

De Jong had a difficult start to the season due to an ankle injury, but the 27-year-old has been a key player over the past few months.

Despite this, there is plenty of speculation regarding his future. His current deal expires in June next year. Barcelona are yet to persuade him to extend his stay with a reasonable pay-cut.

This could pave the way for his departure and reports claim that Chelsea could revive their long-term interest in the Netherlands star.

They won't be alone in the pursuit. Liverpool could also make an approach for the former Ajax star, who could be available for £40m.

United are likewise long-term admirers of the midfielder, but they are unlikely to follow up their interest after Erik ten Hag's exit.

Ten Hag was determined to bring De Jong during his time as United's manager. The Dutchman opted to continue at the Blaugrana.
