The Valley Suns are doing something that their big league affiliate, the Phoenix Suns, may not experience this season. They will be playing basketball beyond the regular season.
The G League regular season wraps up today, and with the postseason just around the corner, there’s still a lot to be decided in terms of matchups and final seeding. Most of the league is in action today, determining where everyone will land.
But for the Valley Suns, who wrapped up their regular season with a win on Thursday, the picture is clear. They’re in. With a solid 20-14 record, they’ve secured the fifth seed in the Western Conference, setting them up for the next phase of the postseason battle.
The next phase? Well, it’s single elimination, baby. The first three rounds of the G League postseason are all do-or-die, with the top two seeds in each conference receiving a first-round bye. After that, it’s a straight-up fight for survival, with the G League Finals being the only series that’s best of three.
Now, today’s drama hinges on the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. If they lose to the Stockton Kings at 5:00pm, the Suns will tie them at 20-14. Since the Suns won both matchups this season, they’d jump into the fourth seed and get to host the Vipers in their first-round single-elimination game.
But, if the Santa Cruz Warriors beat the Rip City Remix tonight, they’ll also sit at 20-14. They’ve split the season series with the Suns and have swept the Vipers, so it could set up a postseason showdown between those two. Where? Your guess is as good as mine. I can’t find tiebreaker information for a three-way tie in the standings in the G League.
Regardless, the Valley Suns are postseason-bound. And all of the fun begins on April 1.
