Manchester United are assessing their options ahead of what is looking likely to be a busy summer transfer window.

Ruben Amorim has been expected to tap into his former club once the summer transfer window opens, and he’s not short of options to bolster this Manchester United squad with.

With the Red Devils still seven points adrift of breaking into the Premier League top ten, there have been a lot of calls for a squad overhaul. A number of senior players are expected to depart this summer, leaving a lot of room for new signings in key areas of concern.

While United have struggled on the attacking front this season, they are also looking to improve their midfield. Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are both expected to move on this summer, while the future of Kobbie Mainoo is also currently a grey area.

Man United interested in Sporting CP midfielder

According to Stretty News, United are looking at potentially signing Morten Hjulmand this summer. The 25-year-old is a key player for Sporting CP and was a favourite starter under Amorim prior to his move to Old Trafford.

Amorim saw Hjulmand arrive at Sporting in 2023 from Italian side Lecce and he made an immediate impact at the Portuguese club. Now, the boss is looking to be reunited with his former player, as United have identified Hjulman as the ‘right profile’ to join the influential Bruno Fernandes in the engine room.

The Denmark international is a natural defensive midfielder, and would provide extra cover for United’s backline as they look to attack next season. When Hjulmand joined Sporting, he penned a five-year deal, committing to the club until 2028.

However, the Primeira Liga inserted a hefty €80 million (£67m) release clause into his terms, which could now come back to bite Amorim and his new side. The report does claim that United believe they can negotiate the price down to the region of €50-60 million (£42-50m) instead.

Kobbie Mainoo Man United future in doubt

As United prepare for a significant clear-out, Mainoo’s future is uncertain. Reports have claimed the club are willing to listen to offers for him, despite him being regarded as a future icon for the Red Devils.

The talk of Mainoo potentially being sold was recently criticised by former club scout Mick Brown, who believes it ‘goes against everything the club’ has built.

“It annoys me that Man United are prepared to let players like Mainoo go in the interest of raising money and making profits,” Brown told Football Insider. “For me, it goes against everything the club have worked to build over a number of years.

“What they should be doing is building around players like Mainoo, [Alejandro] Garnacho and other young players they’ve got instead of spending huge sums on players who aren’t good enough.

“But, this is how they’re choosing to do things, they’re going to sell these players and raise funds. Based on that, I expect they’ll be looking to sell to the highest bidder.”

Chelsea have been credited with interest in signing Mainoo this summer, as contract talks between the player and United have reportedly come to a halt. Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week that there is a ‘genuine chance’ Mainoo could leave at the end of the season.
