Iran-car-accidents

Usually, the issue of road accidents in Iran and the so-called “carriages of death” becomes newsworthy and controversial after the Nowruz holidays. The Situation of Political Prisoners on Death Row in Iran – Part 5

The ruling regime in Iran continues its repression of dissidents through death sentences, relentless torture, and long-term solitary confinement. These instruments of oppression are used to silence any voice of protest and to create an atmosphere of fear in society. In previous reports, we examined the situation of several political prisoners sentenced to death. In this edition, we review the case of Seyed Mohammad Taghavi, a political prisoner held in Evin Prison, who has been subjected to the harshest forms of brutal repression.

Seyed Mohammad Taghavi, a 58-year-old graphic designer and political activist born in 1966, has faced repression, imprisonment, and torture under Iran’s clerical regime for over four decades. He was first arrested in the early 1980s, during the initial years following the Iranian Revolution. Over the years, he was repeatedly pursued and imprisoned. His most recent sentence, issued in 2021, convicted him of “assembly and collusion against national security,” sentencing him to five years in prison and two years of exile in Kahnooj, Kerman Province. However, his freedom was short-lived. In March 2024, he was re-arrested in Chaldoran and transferred to Evin Prison.

Supreme Court Confirms the Death Sentence of Hamid Hosseinnejad Heydaranlou

The Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence of Hamid Hosseinnejad Heydaranlou, a political prisoner, and officially informed him of the ruling on Monday, March 24, 2025. This verdict comes despite the fact that he was denied access to a chosen lawyer during interrogation and trial, and he has rejected all charges brought against him in court. Hamid Hosseinnejad Heydaranlou, a 39-year-old resident of Segrik village in Chaldoran County, was arrested by security forces near the Chaldoran border on April 13, 2023. Initially transferred to the Chaldoran Border Guard detention center, he was granted bail; however, the Ministry of Intelligence prevented his release and transferred him to the Urmia Intelligence Detention Center.

He endured severe physical and psychological torture for 11 months and 10 days, spending 8 of those months under security interrogations. According to reports, an individual named Istiri, the case’s investigative judge, played a direct role in his torture. The purpose of these tortures was to extract forced confessions linking him to armed conflict and cooperation with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Ultimately, under extreme pressure, he was forced to sign pre-written confessions despite having limited literacy.

iran-amputation

Following threats of imminent hand amputation of three prisoners in Urmia Central Prison, Hadi Rostami, one of the sentenced inmates, has issued an open letter from inside the prison, calling on human rights organizations to take urgent action to prevent the execution of what he calls an inhumane punishment. According to reports, on March 13, 2025, prison officials summoned three prisoners — Hadi Rostami, Mehdi Shahivand, and Mehdi Sharafian — to the Office of Sentence Enforcement and informed them that if they fail to obtain the plaintiffs’ consent, their sentence of hand amputation would be carried out within a month.

Hadi Rostami, a prisoner from Ilam Province who has been incarcerated since 2017 on charges of “hudud theft,” has denied the allegations in his letter and stated that he was subjected to severe torture during interrogations at the Urmia Police Intelligence Department. Under duress, he says, he was forced to sign blank sheets of paper, which were later used as coerced confessions. “My voice was never heard,” he writes, “though I repeatedly declared my innocence.”
