Wayne Rooney wowed by 'rapid' £15m Nottingham Forest star as FA Cup history is made vs Brighton

Nottingham Forest are off to Wembley Stadium for the second time in three years after a penalty shootout victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

The draw for the semi-finals of the competition will take place later on Sunday, with Crystal Palace joining the Reds in the final four.

Bournemouth will play Manchester City, whilst Aston Villa will meet Preston later today to try and join Forest at the national stadium.

Ryan Yates and Matz Sels proved to be the heroes of the hour for Forest. Sels saved two penalties in the shootout, whilst Yates made the winning contribution with his kick.

The team selection caused quite the stir from a Forest perspective. Wayne Rooney was critical of Nuno Espirito Santo for one of his decisions, but thankfully it paid dividends.

Wayne Rooney hails Forest star Anthony Elanga

Rooney was handed pundit duties on BBC Sport having won the competition previously as a player.

His previous ties to Derby County were always going to make things tricky for him, with Rooney getting the Freedom of Derby at one point during his time in charge of the Rams.

Rooney did find time to praise one aspect of the Forest performance, with Elanga coming onto his radar for some praise at the end of the match.

He told BBC Sport: “Forest have looked like the team who wanted to go and win it, and it’s down to Anthony Elanga.

“He’s rapid, he hurts defenders with that pace and when he came on, he made a really big difference.”

The 22-year-old is growing as a player as the season progresses and it’s really exciting how far the player can go in his career.

Last time out against Ipswich, Elanga scored twice in one game for the first time in his career and he followed it up with a brilliant display from the bench against Brighton.

The youngster came on through the middle as opposed to his normal position on the right-hand side and caused havoc to the Brighton defence.

Elanga has really kicked on in 2025 and he’s equalled his goals and assists tally from last season with nine games of the campaign remaining.

The future looks really bright for the former Manchester United star and it’s clear he has talent, given that Rooney chose to single him out for praise last night.
