Leicester City fixtures compared with Wolves ahead of nine-game relegation run-in

Having performed the great escape 10 years ago, Leicester City now need the greater escape.

Nigel Pearson's men overcame a seven-point deficit with nine games to go to secure survival in 2015. Ruud van Nistelrooy's City have a nine-point gap to overhaul and the same number of matches to do it.

Plus, while the there were a handful of sides City could drag back into the relegation battle a decade ago, this time there's only one club to catch in Wolves. Opta are giving them a 0.5 per cent chance of survival.

Given the above, and given it's now 13 defeats in 14 games for City, many supporters have given up hope. But van Nistelrooy has vowed not to.

Is there any optimism to be found in the fixture list? We take a look.

Wolves – 17th – 26pts

Fixtures: West Ham (H), Ipswich (A), Tottenham (H), Man United (A), Leicester (H), Man City (A), Brighton (H), Palace (A), Brentford (H)

Frustratingly for those in the chasing pack, Wolves’ fixture list looks close to ideal. All of their next five games are against bottom-half clubs, and, after beating Southampton, they have two more six-pointers to play too.

While City would typically want their competitors at the bottom to draw with each other, they will want an Ipswich win next weekend.

Wolves will have star man Matheus Cunha missing for that game, and for the West Ham fixture, but they've claimed four points from two matches without him so far.

After they host City, they then face Man City and Brighton, before a promising final two fixtures. If Wolves still need points by then, matches against Palace and Brentford, who likely won’t have anything to play for, seem perfect.

Ipswich – 18th – 17pts

Fixtures: Bournemouth (A), Wolves (H), Chelsea (A), Arsenal (H), Newcastle (A), Everton (A), Brentford (H), Leicester (A), West Ham (H)

With three of their next five games against sides chasing European spots, there’s a lot riding on the Tractor Boys’ home clash with Wolves.

They will be reasonably happy with their final four though. A six-pointer against City sandwiched by home games against bottom-half sides with likely nothing to play for, they may feel they can make a miraculous recovery, but they will need results before then.

Leicester City – 19th – 17pts

Fixtures: Man City (A), Newcastle (H), Brighton (A), Liverpool (H), Wolves (A), Southampton (H), Forest (A), Ipswich (H), Bournemouth (A)

City’s fixture schedule is very similar to Ipswich’s in that it looks like they’re relying on their end-of-season run to keep them afloat.

All of their next four are against top-half sides, with Man City, Newcastle and Brighton all in a race for Europe, and Liverpool gunning for the title.

If they’re still alive come their final five, the belief may still be there, but they will have to win all of their three six-pointers, while hope that that provides momentum for victories over Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth too.

Those trips to the City Ground and the Vitality Stadium look far, far trickier than they did when the schedule was first published last June. It has to be said, the fixture list is not kind for van Nistelrooy.

Southampton – 20th – 9pts

Fixtures: Palace (H), Spurs (A), Villa (H), West Ham (A), Fulham (H), Leicester (A), Man City (H), Everton (A)

Seventeen points off the pace, Southampton boss Ivan Juric has thrown in the towel. Defeat to Wolves has seen him concede relegation, and it seems now the plan is to at least go down with a bit of dignity.

To get the win that sees them eclipse Derby's record low, their best bets are either the next two, against Palace or Spurs, or the clash with City in May.
