Coventry City leading chase for Crystal Palace starlet

Coventry City are at the front of the queue of clubs eyeing Crystal Palace youngster Caleb Kporha, according to Alan Nixon.

Coventry City are looking to maintain their push for the Championship play-offs over the final seven games of the season.

The Sky Blues have surged up the table under Frank Lampard over the second half of the campaign. They were beaten by Sheffield United on Friday, but their sights remain firmly on finishing in the top six.

Nonetheless, the relevant figures behind the scenes will have eyes on potential summer transfer window targets too, and a new name has emerged on the Championship club’s radar this weekend.

Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon states that Coventry City are among the clubs eyeing a deal for Crystal Palace defender Caleb Kporha.

The 18-year-old is a highly-rated England youth international and has impressed in the Eagles’ academy, warranting four first-team appearances for the Premier League side. However, with no long-term deal in place, clubs are starting to take note of his situation and could offer him a route out of Selhurst Park.

As such, Coventry City could look to offer him a quick route to first-team football and they are heading the queue of those eyeing a deal.

More on Kporha

After starting out in the Welling United setup, Kporha joined the Crystal Palace academy at a young age.

The rumoured Coventry City target impressed in their U18s with three goals and an assist in 15 games and has stepped up to the U21s early as a result. This season, he has a goal and four assists to his name in eight Premier League 2 games.

As such, Kporha has been a regular on Premier League benches, coming on against Fulham and Arsenal. He started in an EFL Cup clash against the Gunners too, also coming on off the bench in the FA Cup against Doncaster Rovers.

A long-term van Ewijk replacement?

Coventry City have a fine right-back in Milan van Ewijk. He is arguably one of the best in his position outside of the Premier League and that has prompted interest from elsewhere before.

Some feel a step up may await the Dutchman if the Sky Blues aren’t able to win promotion and that could see a new signing like Kporha given the chance to make the starting berth his own if he was to join.

Such an opportunity could prove tempting at just 18 but with other clubs keen and Palace eager to keep him, time will tell just what comes of the new link.
