[Arsenal have confirmed](https://www.arsenal.com/news/andrea-berta-joins-sporting-director) that Andrea Berta has been appointed sporting director.
The 53-year-old Italian joins the Gunners’ Executive Team after 12 years at Atletico Madrid, eight spent as Sporting Director, and replaces Edu Gaspar who resigned in November.
During his time in the Spanish capital, the former banker helped Diego Simeone build squads that twice won La Liga, reached two Champions League finals and claimed Copa del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, Europa League and Uefa Super League titles.
For all the club’s recent achievements, it’s uncertain how much power Berta wielded when it came to squad building. CEO Gil Marin has been described by The Athletic as Atletico’s ‘primary decision maker’ while Simeone was also very influential.
Berta resigned from Atletico in January, six months before his contract was due to end, amidst suggestions he’d been largely sidelined. It’s understood he’s since spent time in London improving his English.
Arsenal interviewed a range of candidates for Berta’s position, including internal candidate Jason Ayto, ex-Gunner Tomas Rosicky and the likes of Dan Ashworth, Roberto Olabe and Thiago Scuro.
It’s believed the recruitment process was started by headhunters and involved face time with executive vice-chairman Tim Lewis, managing director Richard Garlick and co-owner Josh Kroenke.
Berta is expected to be present at Tuesday’s clash with Fulham giving him time before the end of the season to get up to speed on the Gunners’ summer transfer plans and the various contract situations that need resolving.
Speaking to the official site, he said, “I am thrilled to be joining Arsenal in what is a hugely exciting period for the club.
“I have watched with great interest the way Arsenal has evolved in recent years and I have admired the hard work that has gone in to reestablishing the club as a major force in European football with a passionate following around the world.
“The club has great values and a rich history, and I am looking forward to playing my part in shaping a successful future with a great team.
“I cannot wait to get started in my new role and I am really looking forward to experiencing my first game at Emirates Stadium together with our supporters.”
He’s got a big job on his hands, so good luck to him.
