If any of the Newcastle United players who won the Carabao Cup were under any doubt as to the magnitude of their achievement, Saturday would surely have changed.

While some of the Newcastle United players would have lifted trophies during their career before arriving at St James’ Park, it’s hard to imagine them celebrating any of them quite as wildly as the Carabao Cup.

Indeed, Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final earlier this month and were finally able to celebrate it properly on Saturday.

Thousands lined the streets of the city during jubilant Newcastle celebrations, with Eddie Howe shocked to see fans hanging off lampposts just to get a better view of the open top bus parade which made its way across from St James’ to the Town Moor.

Such was the sheer size of the party, team captain Bruno Guimaraes made a rather interesting comment.

The Brazilian would later grab headlines with an expletive-ridden song about Sandro Tonali and Sunderland later on in the evening.

However, earlier on in the day, the midfielder was perhaps more philosophical than that.

Guimaraes conducted an emotional post-match interview after winning the Carabao Cup at Wembley and was equally as impressed once the party had arrived back in Newcastle.

Speaking to TV presenter duo Ant and Dec, he claimed that seeing so many supporters arrive to applaud the team made him feel like “the best player in the world.”

“When I first signed for the club, I said I want to put my name in the club’s history,” he said.

“I’m feeling this now. I’m feeling, I don’t know, I’m feeling like the best player in the world now!”

What has changed very quickly about Bruno Guimaraes at Newcastle United

The Brazil star has always been a popular figure amongst the Newcastle United support but things have gone up another level of late.

Howe named the former Lyon man as team captain before the season started, raising his level of importance.

Now, Newcastle sources think Guimaraes has grown into a dressing room leader, developing into an even more crucial figure after being given the armband.

The first Newcastle captain since 1969 to actually win a major honour, it’s fair to say that decision has worked out.
