Brazilian sensation Matheus Cunha has intimated he is ready to ‘take the next step’ in his career by leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Cunha has almost single-handedly led Wolves’ fight against relegation this season with 13 Premier League goals in 26 matches. The striker has scored in five of Wolves’ seven league victories.

Wolves have managed to pull clear of relegation danger in recent weeks and have a nine-point cushion to 18th-placed Ipswich Town with nine games to play.

Cunha extended his contract at Wolves in February, temporarily ending speculation over his future before the winter window shut, but the striker’s new deal includes a £62.5 million release clause.

With Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest among the Premier League clubs linked to Cunha, it looks as though this will be his final season at Molineux.

“I had a lot of offers but I wouldn’t feel well if I had done it,” Cunha told the Guardian.

“Some things you can’t control but I couldn’t leave the club in the middle of the season, in a difficult situation, in the relegation zone.

“Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to fight for titles, for big things. I have potential.”

Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid for a club-record £43million in January 2023 when Julen Lopetegui was manager.

The 25-year-old has scored 29 goals in 65 appearances for Wolves to make himself one of the most coveted players in the Premier League.
