Town Women continue their charge to the Championship as they beat Gwalia United

A very fast start from Town when Lucy O'Brien ran the ball forward straight from kick-off, winning a free kick on the edge of the area which was taken by Grace Garrad who hit the crossbar.

The Tractor Girls had a great opportunity in the 9th minute as Sophie Peskett was played through by Ella Rutherford, but her low effort across goal was well-saved by O'Sullivan in the Gwalia net.

Town continued to be on top and press for a goal. O'Brien came close with a headed effort in the 26th minute, but it flew just over the bar.

Town broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute as a great free kick was delivered in by Garrad, which met the head of Thomas who headed into the back of the net.

O'Brien had the ball in the back of the net as the 45th-minute hit, but she was deemed offside when the ball was played through.

The second half was a much more even affair, with Gwalia remaining firm at the back denying Town.

In the 59th minute, Garrad swung a free kick deep into the area with Megan Wearing heading it into the bundle of players, and the ball fell nicely to Thomas who smashed in her second of the game.

Summer Hughes almost added her name to the scoresheet after she met a deep cross from Peskett, but her right-footed volley smashed the crossbar to deny Hughes what would have been a sensational goal.

There were strong calls for a penalty in the 80th minute as Peskett went down in the area but the referee waved claims away.

A comfortable game for Town Women, with the only blemish on the day coming when Rutherford had to come off after a lengthy stoppage.

Ipswich Town Women have extended their lead at the top of the table to three points, with a game in hand.

Town head to Watford next week where, if they win, could be one game away from securing promotion to the Championship.
