With the Pittsburgh Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh football program sharing a facility, it’s no surprise that the Steelers had a sizable contingent on hand for Pitt’s Pro Day earlier this week, a group that included assistant general manager Andy Weidl. The Steelers met with at least two players there, according to Sportskeeda’s Tony Pauline, who reported that the Steelers had a meeting with LB Brandon George and WR Konata Mumpfield.
Both George and Mumpfield could wind up being Day 3 picks in April’s draft. George spent six seasons at Pitt but had his best year in 2024, totaling 80 combined tackles to go along with two sacks, six tackles for a loss, an interception and a forced fumble. Along with the Steelers, Pauline reported that George met with the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs.
At Pitt’s Pro Day, George ran a 4.65 40-yard dash and reached 42.5 inches in the vertical jump, while also putting up 28 bench press reps.
The Steelers also had wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni in attendance at Pitt’s Pro Day, and he likely had a close eye on Mumpfield. Mumpfield had a solid showing at the East-West Shrine Bowl in late January after a senior season at Pitt that saw him catch 52 passes for 813 yards and five touchdowns. A transfer from Akron, Mumpfield received an invite to the NFL Combine where he measured in at 5113 and 186 pounds, and he ran a 4.59 4o-yard dash in Indianapolis.
When Mumpfield was at Akron, Steelers quarterbacks coach Tom Arth was his head coach, so there’s already a built-in connection to the team.
Per Pauline, Mumpfield met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons in addition to the Steelers.
Neither linebacker nor wide receiver is a huge early-round priority for the Steelers, especially after acquiring WR DK Metcalf. While the Steelers could look to take a receiver on Day 2, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they waited until Day 3. Mumpfield and George are both names to watch, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they came in for a pre-draft visit as local visits, as Pitt K Ben Sauls did recently.
While the proximity makes Pitt an easy stop on the Pro Day trail for the Steelers, it’s at least worth paying attention to who they met with, especially with Weidl and multiple position coaches in attendance.
