Jordan welcomes Syria's new government, affirms commitment to cooperation

**AMMAN, Jordan**

Jordan on Sunday welcomed the formation of Syria’s new government and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with its neighbor across all sectors.

In a statement, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry expressed its support for the newly formed government, voicing hope that it would “meet the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, equality, dignity, and peace after years of suffering.”

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sufyan Al-Qudah emphasized Jordan’s “commitment to fostering deeper collaboration with the Syrian government,” describing the relationship as “historically strategic.”

He also underscored the importance of building ties based on “mutual respect, trust, and cooperation to address all issues in a way that serves the interests of both nations.”

Qudah reiterated Jordan’s “long-standing position in supporting Syria’s reconstruction on foundations that preserve its security, unity, and stability.”

On Saturday evening, Syria’s transitional president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, announced the new government lineup from the presidential palace in Damascus.

The newly appointed Syrian government consists of 23 ministers, including one woman. Five members previously served in the transitional administration formed on Dec. 10, 2024, to oversee the country’s affairs.

An interim government headed by Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir was appointed for a three-month period after the Bashar Assad regime was ousted by anti-regime forces, led by Sharaa, in December. Sharaa was declared president for a transitional period in late January.

Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.
