Newcastle eyeing £25m Geordie talent? – One to watch this summer

Newcastle United may be set to add another Geordie talent to their midfield rankings this summer.

Lewis Miley has emerged as a promising young talent who is expected to continue to push for first team minutes after surpassing Sean Longstaff in the pecking order, but he may have a separate local lad to compete with in the midfield if reports are accurate.

Summer plans are continuing to develop with sources close to the club reaffirming that talk about our star players leaving are purely rumours. A six-man shortlist for right-winger has also been revealed this week, and now a local lad has entered the conversation of prospective signings.

According to The Chronicle, a move for Sunderland sensation Chris Rigg is one to keep a ‘close eye on’ this summer.

The 17-year-old, from Hebburn, became Sunderland’s second youngest appearance maker two years ago when he came off the bench against Shrewsbury Town at just 15, and it seems he’s been long admired by the Magpies.

Prior to signing a professional deal at Sunderland, Lee Ryder reveals that Rigg was hotly pursued by Toon academy boss Steve Harper.

A boyhood Mag through his father, photos of the teenager in attendance at St. James Park, and in Newcastle kits growing up, have already surfaced online.

A fee of £25m is rumoured to be the requirement to prise Rigg from the Mackems should they fail to secure promotion, but there will be competition from fellow Premier League sides West Ham and Everton to secure the England Under-19 star.

Chris Rigg is already familiar with Lewis Miley with the two having played together for England Under-19s over the most recent international break.

Miley played every minute of three games as England won two and drew one of their U19 European Championship Qualifying games.

Rigg came off the bench in a 2-0 win against Wales, but started next to his fellow Geordie in a 0-0 draw against Turkey and scored in a 1-0 win over Portugal. Both hail from a family full of Newcastle fans and no doubt shared words about our success in the Carabao Cup final.

Rigg will certainly have plenty of offers with over 50 appearances to his name already, perhaps a familiar face could help sway him to his boyhood club.
