Patton, from Sydney, who was living and working on Norfolk Island, was the first person to be killed on the island since it was settled in 1856 by 190 descendants of the HMS _Bounty_ mutineers.
Police, flown from the Australian mainland, later arrested New Zealand man Glenn McNeill, 29, for the murder. In 2007, he was was sentenced to at least 18 years in jail for killing Patton.
