Mason Rudolph could be an option as Steelers’ starting QB, Mike Tomlin says: ‘We like him’

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have one veteran quarterback on the roster in Mason Rudolph. However, could he be the starting quarterback for the Steelers in 2025? Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not rule out the idea.

"I think that’s why we acquired him. We like Mason Rudolph, but that’s no secret," Tomlin said. "His experience within our building certainly helps. Not only helps him, but helps us."

The Steelers’ liking for Rudolph traces back to 2023, when he scorched three teams down the stretch to earn the Steelers a playoff berth.

“We’re optimistic about the room that we’re constructing. Obviously, we’re excited about having Mason Rudolph back,” Tomlin said. “Our knowledge of him not only as a player but as a man. It’s exciting to have him back and I know he’s excited to be back. But, certainly, we are going to explore all our options to round that room out.”

Rudolph went 1-4 in his starts in 2024, throwing nine touchdowns and nine intercpetions while amassing 1530 over the year. Now, Rudolph is back on the market and the Steelers could be one of his landing spots.

Rudolph’s breakout three games came at the end of the 2023 season, where he led the Steelers from 7-7 to 10-7 and a playoff berth, where they would lose to the Buffalo Bills.

The Steelers drafted Rudolph in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He stayed with the team through the 2023 season after a second lease on his NFL life.
