Leeds United, Sheffield United and Burnley exact points tallies predicted after title race twist

Leeds United are still predicted to win automatic promotion to the Premier League this season - despite being handed a late hammer blow against Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

The Whites looked to be on course for a much-needed and hugely-important victory when Wilfried Gnonto bagged late on to make it 2-1 - sparking wild celebrations. However, Zan Vipotnik's strike in the sixth minute of added time proved too much for Illan Meslier to keep out and the points were shared with the South Wales club.

Daniel Farke's side dropping points was particularly unfortunate for Leeds' title and promotion hopes as their two main rivals Sheffield United and Burnley both won this weekend. The Blades beat Coventry City 3-1 on Friday night as Gustavo Hamer, Tyrese Campbell and Rhian Brewster all scored.

The Clarets, meanwhile, defeated another play-off hopeful in Bristol City after Zian Flemming's early effort. Those results mean Sheffield United now hold a two-point advantage at the top of the Championship ahead of Leeds in second and Burnley in third.

However, Scott Parker's men are now only behind Leeds on goal difference. Following today's twist, Opta has updated their predicted points tallies for the three promotion rivals and it has thrown up an intriguing picture.

According to their analysis, they expect Sheffield United to finish top with an expected points tally of 95.7. Leeds are tipped to finish second with 95.31 points while Burnley are expected to gain 93.98 points.

If we were to round up these figures, in reality it would leave the Blades on 96, the Whites on 95 and the Clarets on 94. However, whether this is a blip in the system, Leeds have a 40.62 per cent chance of winning the title compared to Sheffield United's 37 per cent and Burnley's 22.38 per cent.

What this perhaps tells us is that, unsurprisingly, the Premier League promotion race remains too close to call despite a bad weekend for the Whites. Leeds return to action next weekend when they travel to Luton Town, getting things underway in Saturday afternoon's early kick-off.
