‘Messed it up’: How Chelsea ruined Victor Osimhen deal after coming ‘very close’ to landing him last summer - journalist

Chelsea could make a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray.

The likes of Chelsea and PSG could compete for Osimhen’s signature this summer, with the 26-year-old unlikely to remain in Turkey.

However, had things gone differently in the last summer transfer window, Osimhen would have already been at Chelsea.

The Nigerian has not let that transfer saga impact his season. He has been in fantastic form for Galatasaray, scoring 26 goals in 31 appearances this term.

Why Chelsea could not agree personal terms with Victor Osimhen

Last summer, it was well-documented that personal terms proved to be the sticking point in Chelsea’s bid to land Osimhen.

Osimhen’s move to Chelsea fell through on deadline day, and journalist Simon Phillips has now shared why getting the forward to sign a contract proved so difficult.

According to Phillips, the Blues came “very close” to securing Osimhen but messed things up after a disagreement regarding the incentives in the player’s contract.

On Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, the journalist posted: “We were VERY close to signing him last summer but got stuck on wages. Basically, our sources have heard that it was more around what the incentives of the wages would bring them up to rather than a base wage. The agreements were close but then goalposts were moved and really, Chelsea messed it up.”

It will now be interesting to see whether Chelsea actually do return for Osimhen when the transfer market reopens, with the Nigeria international not being the club’s only option.

Chelsea like Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres as well, so they could make a move for one of the two instead.

How much Chelsea could have to pay to sign Victor Osimhen

Napoli have moved on from Osimhen, signing Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea last August.

The Belgian has helped Antonio Conte’s side to mount a title challenge this season after scoring 11 times in 28 Serie A appearances.

Nevertheless, Napoli will not sell Osimhen on the cheap. Napoli want around £62m for Osimhen when the transfer window opens, which is a lot of money.

The former Lille star, though, has shown in the current campaign and recent seasons that he is probably worth that figure. Osimhen scores goals, making him a very valuable player.
